As we continue the series on Christian cliches, this week we look at the phrase "God said it, I believe it, that settles it." Of course what Christians generally mean when they say “God said it” is that the bible says it, therefore they believe it, and that settles it. The problem with that is that it oversimplifies scripture.
We are to take the bible seriously. But never literally. We are to read it, study it, wrestle with it, and allow it to encourage and challenge us.
When we read and seek to understand scripture, we should interpret it through the lens of what it teaches us about the heart, character and will of God, and through the commands to love God and love others.
